Sustainability at CBIP Logistics

Sustainability at CBIP Logistics

At CBIP, our objective is simple: work every day to be part of the solution and leave things better off for the next generation.

We believe the steps we take today to minimise our environmental impact are necessary to ensure that our families, colleagues, and neighbours all have the same opportunities in the future.

That’s why we are a carbon-neutral company, and we strive to improve sustainability in the Asian logistics market.

Our Sustainability Story

Co-founders Nick Bartlett and Chris Crutchley created CBIP Logistics to bridge the gap between fragmented logistics practices and the emerging world of e-commerce logistics. What started as a goal to provide innovative and collaborative logistics services in an industry deeply in need of a shake up soon turned into something more. Embracing sustainable business practices became part of that shift.

Do you ever lay awake at night wondering if the world will be a safe, fun, clean place for the next generation?

Like many people, Chris and Nick are familiar with this feeling. They wanted to make sure CBIP didn’t contribute to climate change or jeopardise a healthy environment for future generations.

CBIP’s co-founders are from New Zealand. Wind turbines, composting, and fuel-efficient vehicles surrounded them while they grew up. After moving to Asia, Nick noticed the overconsumption and excessive waste right away. He didn’t realize how much he cared about environmental practices until moving somewhere with fewer green initiatives.

With more and more consumers demanding environmentally friendly products, Chris and Nick saw an opportunity to meet customers’ needs and provide carbon-neutral services in the logistics world. Being carbon neutral benefits partners, customers, and CBIP Logistics. CBIP is building a strong, sustainable foundation that is better for the planet and has a future in the long-term.

2022 Highlights and sustainability in action

Freight distance traveled = 5,003,717 km

Number of orders delivered = 245,601

Strategically-located, vetted global and local partners = 60+

Carbon offsetting projects supported by CBIP = 4

Shipments made carbon neutrally = 100%

Based on rigorous audits, governing agency South Pole calculated that CBIP’s business activities emitted the
equivalent of 5,540 tons of carbon dioxide in 2021. We purchased carbon credits to offset those emissions in 2022.

Emissions broken down into scopes:

0% came from direct operations (scope 1).
0.02% came from indirect sources such as electricity,
heating, and cooling (scope 2).
99.98% came from warehousing, transportation, and other
supply chain activities performed by our partners (scope 3).

Why we prioritise sustainability

1.

Fighting emissions in transportation

The transportation sector is responsible for about 25% of greenhouse gas emissions globally. While the freight and logistics industry is one of the most difficult to shift toward more sustainable operations and lower-carbon fuels, CBIP Logistics is determined to lessen the environmental impacts as much as possible. That’s why the company officially became certified carbon-neutral in 2022 by meeting global standards governed by South Pole.

2.

Leading the way with suppliers

CBIP works with many subcontractors, so the majority of our emissions come from their activities. Though we don’t have control over their sustainability goals and progress, we do monthly audits to gather the emissions data we need to stay carbon neutral. We hope to work with more suppliers that put sustainability efforts at the top of their priority list in the future. Our subcontractors can invest in things like renewable electricity, sustainable packaging, efficient warehouse HV/AC systems, and lower-carbon fuels to lower emissions.

3.

Leaving the world a better place for the next generations

We’re conscious that all of us in the CBIP team have families and children. We want to make a difference for them so that the world is in a better place as they grow up. Climate change is already impacting vulnerable communities and ecosystems today. We have the power to cause a ripple effect in the industry and create positive change for the environment.

4.

Playing our part to reach Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 with a goal to bring peace and prosperity to people and the planet now and in the future. CBIP is focused on the SDGs to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns and end poverty in all its forms everywhere.

Every step toward sustainability matters. Whether that step comes from our customers, our suppliers, our staff, or our partners, it makes a difference. CBIP will continue to be a carbon-neutral company, and we will continue to educate our internal and external partners about how we can all be a part of an important shift in the industry.

常见问题

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are any gases that contribute to climate change through the effect of global warming (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and more). As more of these gases are released, the atmosphere traps more heat from the sun every year. This is causing the climate to change. GHGs and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are often used interchangeably with carbon emissions when talking about the climate.

Climate change is causing rising sea levels, coral bleaching, and more frequent and intense natural disasters such as heat waves, hurricanes, floods, droughts, and wildfires. Vulnerable communities that contribute the least to climate change are often impacted the most. These communities and fragile ecosystems often cannot adapt fast enough or bounce back after devastating natural disasters. According to a 2021 study, 410 million people live in coastal areas that may be underwater by 2100. The next generation (our kids) and future generations will have to grapple with the increasingly damaging impacts of climate change.

In the summer of 2023, we have seen record high temperatures and heat waves across the northern hemisphere. Extreme heat kills thousands every year. Floods destroy buildings and homes of generations. Cities like Miami experience “sunny day flooding” due to rising tides and sea levels. Prolonged droughts are turning previously farmable land to sand in Africa and forcing people to migrate to survive. Devastating wildfires such as the one that hit Maui bring historical towns to dust. These impacts will continue to worsen if the climate continues to warm.

Carbon emissions largely come from burning fossil fuels such as oil and gas. Transportation, agriculture, electricity, heating and cooling homes, and deforestation all result in carbon emissions.

CBIP Logistics is the first 4PL in Asia that is carbon neutral. Instead of just claiming we are carbon neutral, we are certified carbon neutral through a company called South Pole. We are also engaging with our suppliers and subcontractors to improve sustainability efforts.

Scope 1 emissions encompass any carbon emissions that result from a company’s direct operations. This includes emissions from any equipment owned and operated by the company.

Scope 2 emissions encompass any carbon emissions that come from indirect sources. This includes emissions that come from electricity, heating, or cooling purchased from a separate company.

Scope 3 emissions include all other indirect emissions. These emissions typically come from a company’s supply chain, and they are often the largest portion of a company’s emissions. Over 99% of CBIP’s emissions are considered scope 3.
